Attention Showfolks of Sarasota Directors

Again, I read all the comments from various young and old circus staff and fans of the circus.  It is noted there had been two meetings in March 2006.  What was said or stated regarding the Showfolks.org website is not known or talked about?.  As far as I can see nothing had been done to solve this silly thing regarding the great Web Site that gave out information regarding Circus in our Great Country the United States of America, and other Countries that are involved the Circus.  (Lets hear something about the Web Site)  Thank You for listening...

Why is there no mention of the Circus Historical Society annual convention in Sarasota FL in May of 2006.

For more info go to www.circushistory.org

With all the organizations having membership and money problems, you would think that they would stay in contact with each other.

I hope you keep open the website. It is one way to stay in contact.  I am not a member of the Showfolks.  I have not lived in Sarasota since the fifties.  But it is good to know what is going on there. I was on the Ringling Show from 1953 to 1956 and worked for the Front Door and Ticket Departments as well as on Ring stock in 1953.

I wonder is there is anything planned to commemorate the closing of the show under the big top- on July 16, 1956?  I was there and took the long train ride back to Sarasota, a very sad experience.  I will never forget that day, and all the wonderful days that I had with the show.  It was a great part of my life.

It would be good if you could get some of the folks who were on the show that season to reminisce about that experience.  Love to hear from anyone.  Sincerely,

Bill Taggart

I found the Showfolks website closing while searching for Buckles Woodcocks blog, which if you have not seen is a must. I'm not surprised that the club is unable to maintain such an innovative thing as a website. Closing this resource is like the death of a friend. The club is run by people who have lost touch with the rest of the world. Why can't the meetings be run in a blog format for those still on the road, those people who have computers on the road. Cell phones can connect your computer to the internet, and I know everyone in Circus has a cell phone unless your retired and not trying to book your trade. The club should be run by active members of the performing circus arts, and not members of the olde guard of artists who's time has past. Don't get me wrong I respect those in circus who have come before me, but if we don't grab the future by the horns we will be left on the arena floor.

I have been a member of our club for over 20 years, and am currently on the board of directors. I am amazed and thrilled, for the first time in probably the history of our club we have stirred up controversy with members of our club over comments about the web site. It wasn't our intention, but it is nice to see, and hopefully those people really care about our club and not just the web site. Please don't lose interest! My husband, myself, and family pretty much try to attend all socials and meetings at the club. However, most of the time it is pretty sad how many people show up. On Saturday night sometimes there might be only 3 cars, the bartender, the President, and ours. Seeing this I decided to get involved and run for the board, foolishly thinking that I along with other board members could maybe bring life back into a one of a kind, most unique club in the world! But so far the only thing we have accomplished is creating an uproar over the website. If only half of the people commenting on the website would attend the club socials and meetings, we would have standing room only! For those of you members who are upset about the outcome of our general membership meeting, you should have attended. Our meetings are no secret and if you are a member, the schedule of our meetings are in our newsletter and basically are the same time every month. For those of you who are not members of our club and have offered an opinion, please join! Help keep this unique club alive! Don't get me wrong, I am all for modern technology, however the club wasn't built to sit open for a few dedicated members to stop by for a drink, or to be photographed so the pictures can be put on the website. It is a meeting place for that rare fraternity of Showfolks and fans. If the club dies so does the website! Sincerely,

Cindy Herriott Wells, Second Vice President, Showfolks of Sarasota

How saddened I was to see the Showfolks website closed.  I came to live in Cyprus in 2003 after 20 years working with Zippos Circus in the UK.  There is no tradition of Circus here in Cyprus and to date only one show has come to the Island, we were very lucky to see Circus Medrano ( Italy ) in September of last year.  I was at a great loss and missed the Circus very much, talking of the many shows and people I had met along the way I still felt it was a life I wanted to be part of so made the step and bought a laptop having no knowledge of their workings of modern technology! For those who don't have one, as well as being a great tool for business they are a mindful of information.

Every week I spend a couple of hours looking at the many websites on the Circuses around the world to see what's happening and where the shows are playing, ( C I R C U S keys are wearing thin ). Showfolks being one of them and a very good site. Where, what, whoever in their right mind would want for it to close! Please reconsider this closure of the Showfolks site and let it go from strength to strength with positive input and feedback, so much pleasure is given to those who are unable for whatever reason to visit shows and Showfolks.  I was lucky enough to have visited Showfolks in Sarasota a few years back where I met and talked to many people who had interests and involvements in the Circus business, am sure they are all feeling somewhat sad at the closure.  Warm regards,

Maureen Carter

I wintered in Sarasota between RBB&B seasons "way back when". I'm very sorry to learn of the website being closed down. I am also surprised to read that some people thought the club was created only for performers. I recall a number or people writing me about the club, and I knew several who contributed items to get it open and operating. One of the old clowns bought a slew of dinnerware for the parties, and one of the prop guys bought other items. so I, personally, know it was NOT just for performers, and never should be!!.  It's a shame that some of the older retired show people down there do not currently have the internet. If they did, they'd find plenty to occupy their time. They might even work on their genealogy to leave to their grandkids. I hope that the next issue of the Showfolks newsletter states that the site has been saved!! Although I live 3,000 miles away in Southern California, I am still a member, and I recently included some copy in my Circus Report column urging circus fans to join the club and support it. Good luck!!

I, Anthony R. The web site is a good source of communication through out our GREAT COUNTY, and also outside of our country.  Lets not make fools out of this:  (DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE WEB SITE)

I am a nephew of showman Jack Bonham Moore, the long-time owner of Carson & Barnes. I am a writer, and many of my published tales center on my time trouping with Jack's show. Most recently, I penned a story that was unusual for me, because it is a lament -- something foreign to the sparkle and laughter that are hallmarks the American Circus. The story is a remembrance of the times when most great shows toured under canvas, and of the realization that those times were fleeting.  Little by little, many of the great caravans have died. They did not meet their end by a sudden careless hand.  What fell upon them was the slow tide of ambivalence, the droll tones of computer games, and the barrage of televised alternatives.  In some ways, we all had part in killing them -- for taking such talent for granted, and for forgetting the values that formed around our own youth.

Now, it seems, Showfolks has come to crossroads. To the left is the circus graveyard. To the right is a path that continues to celebrate a cherished past.  Let us travel with the spirit worth keeping. It is too easy to release the strings of the remaining balloons.

These are a few lines from my story, "The Bottom of the Top."  "The memory of the scent of wet hay mingled with cotton candy can still kindle my senses and liven my heartbeat. For a handful of nickels, anyone could enter through Alice’s looking glass. Small children would cup their eyes and strain them to the pinnacle of the canvas, where the daring took flight on those narrow bars. Tiny mouths hung open as a fearless man held court before a pride of snarling cats—each intent on reclaiming their mastery at his slightest mistake."

I'm an ex-circus performer who was once a member of Showfolks of Sarasota, however, I'm now in the Digital Media Industry. It is unfortunate the website wasn't used as a tool for Showfolks of Sarasota to generate income for the club through an advertisement page, and perhaps a merchandising page. Not only can a website be a conduit of information for its visitors, but it can be a lucrative business venture as well.  Regards,

Contrary to one Showfolks officer's e-mail message directed to a Showfolks member stating "SOME PEOPLE LOVE TO SEE THEIR NAME ON THE WEB....OVER AND OVER", I did not submit a comment pertaining to Showfolks website to see my name in print..  Heck, I can type my name and look at all day long, if I want.  Since I also own a couple of printing companies, I could also print my name in many places, if I wanted.  But, this is not my need, or cause.

It is recognized, you have to drag some people into the 21st Century, screaming and yelling with resistance.  For those of us who use a Computer, we have taken a big step.  Many of us are Old Farts, but we have still taken that big step.  Many people fear the unknown, the new, and things they are ignorant about.  For all of us who have taken the step, we know the power of and opportunities presented by computers.

I was thinking a few days ago, what would some of the old timers think about the Internet?  What would they think about being able to send a letter to the other side of the world in 2 seconds?  What would they think of typing an instant message, and getting one back in seconds?  You can find anything in the world you are looking for on the Internet, and I mean ANYTHING.  It is all immediately available.  A website is the best thing any organization could have, even Showfolks. Many people are retired, or perhaps live someplace else.  They can't go to the Showfolks Club for one reason or another, but they are still interested  to know what is going on in the business.  I am no longer in the business, but I like to know what is going on, and how everyone is getting along.  I hope Showfolks Website gets back up and into operation.  It can be very informative for everyone who visits.  If I can help in any way, I will be happy to do so. Thanks...

I  was very sad to here that the website is no longer. I have been in show business all my life and recently got off the road and moved to Frederick Maryland with my husband Mike & two boys Michael & Matthew. I miss the business terribly, as we all do once we are no longer involved. However most of all I miss my friends, the website and E- mails through our technology of the computer is one of the things that have kept me feeling like I still am involved with events going on in the business and with my friends. From many comments I have read about the closing of the website, I am not the only one who feels this way. All the new generation of circus performers use all the latest technology, finding everything on the web including the Showfolks website. It is in the clubs best interest that you keep the site open for the new generation to learn & get to know the past generation and to also keep an interest in the Showfolks club. However most importantly keep it open for us, the ones that love the business and though we are no longer on the road we still want to know "what is going on in the backyard"!

Respectfully, Tracey Wilson Bannister

What a shame if the website does close. It is one of the few active links for us in the UK and elsewhere in the world to keep in touch with circus in the USA.  The Circus Friends Association of Great Britain maintains a telephone voice recorded message service to tell fans where UK circuses are appearing.  This is available to all who are interested and not just paying members. The service does not produce revenue and costs us, but we see it as a service to all fans.  Shame the Showfolks web is not treated in a similar manner.

Kind Regards, John Exton

My wife and I were at the meeting being discussed.  What a "circus".  The people who want to close the website appear to believe that the webmaster is making some ridiculous profit for this undertaking.  We understand, this is not the case.  We hope and pray the membership, both old and young, will get this resolved, or there will be NO Showfolks in the future.  The powers who are running the club currently must communicate with and listen to those of us who will run it in the future.  The circus has changed, and we have to change with it.  If the current officers and directors do not understand this, then close the show.  Worldwide, people are asking for the website to be kept open.  We join them with this request, no matter the outcome.  The webmaster should certainly be proud of the job accomplished for Showfolks.  We pray he continues. Thank you.

I have been a member of Showfolks Club for sixteen years and no one asked for my opinion regarding closing our website. There was no notice to the membership of a vote to be taken on the subject, which implies a dictatorship.  As others have stated, Showfolks Club is a well-kept secret that many more people would be interested in with a little, good PR program. The website has provided a breakthrough and should be continued if the Club and Circus is to thrive.  We, children of all ages, love everything circus. Keep the website. It's vital to the world knowing about the Circus Capital.  Life is a Circus!

We like to keep in touch with your members by e/mail from addresses on the website. Many of them correspond back to us exchanging ideas beneficial to the industry on both sides of the Pacific.  If you get rid of your website, we look forward to you posting (snail mail) the information to us and then you will really know the costs of postage which will far exceed the lousy $300.00 just to keep your members ( and other interested parties round the world) informed of happenings. It is a shame that just because a select few of our members either do not own a computer, or do not understand the importance and convenience a web site has to offer, would cause them to vote it out.  I was one of the few at that meeting that voiced my opinion against closing down the website to no avail. It seems that when the Vice President wants something done there are no options other than hers. What I witnessed at that meeting was a very childish exhibition of yelling at the members, and also intimidating a fellow board member.  This display truly embarrassed me to be a member of Showfolks so my family and I walked out.  I think that if you serve as a board member, or Vice President, you should not only respect everyone, but also lead by example.  I did not know that Showfolks was a Dictatorship led by the Vice  President.  I think that if this trend continues, in the not so distant future, there will be no more Showfolks and that will be a true shame.  I hope that the rest of the Board and membership will re-examine this issue and continue with the website.  Thanks.

As I got up and said at the membership meeting on Wed. Feb. 15., " I think the Showfolks Website is a good thing for the club and a great PR". I add now, I also believe it adds so much prestige to an already creditable organization. I did not make the motion to close the website. I made no motion, but when the motion was made to close the site, I voted in favor of it, just for the sake of stopping all the bickering and heavy argument that was taking place at the meeting and was dividing the members into separate enemy camps.  In retrospect, I should have made a motion to table the website discussion ( of which it wasn't) to a later date when research, and more accurate information was available. Here I am, a "Monday Morning Quarterback", but that would have been the thing to do as several members had already walked out of the meeting. One of the board members even kept standing up and shouting opinions.  I have no idea if that comes under Robert's Rules of Order. but it certainly came across in a dictatorship style of delivery.  I see no reason, when things quite down, and information is correctly given, why the website could not once again be voted in with most of everyone's agreement.  A vote is just an opinion, and everyone has a right to one.  Whether the vote opinion agrees with yours or not should certainly have nothing to do with your personal relationship with that person. We are all, in our own way, trying to do what we think is right for the club.  In most cases, only time will tell.  Remember the television series, was it a radio show I think called "Town Hall Tonight".  It always started with the quote: "I MAY DISAGREE WITH YOUR OPINION, BUT I WILL DEFEND TO MY DEATH YOUR RIGHT TO SAY IT".

Once again, those of us that see the future, and understand the technology and its place in the future, are screwed again by those that do not understand!  While I am not a current member of Show folks of Sarasota, and do not have a say in the decisions of the club, I do not agree with the Boards decision to shut the website down.  Way to go!  I hope it saves the club a great deal of money.

I am not a member of Show folks of Sarasota because of the lack of projection and planning for the future.  What has this club done to extend the life of the circus as we know it today?  Stop living in the past people, and start looking to the future and how we as a group can protect the business that is viable today.  Change is inevitable.......if you don't change you will Die!!!!

Respect the performers of yesteryear, honor them with complements and fond memories, but do not forsake what they endured to keep the circus alive in their era.  Do what you can NOW to honor your families and friends that have devoted their entire lives to this business.

We don't belong to Showfolks of Sarasota because we live on the west coast. It's incredible in this day and age to learn that a web site with so much to offer "kinkers" and the public is going to be removed from the Internet.  If the reason is the $300.00, for Pete's sake, there must be someone who can come up with the money. That seems like a ridiculous reason. If the reason is because "some of the members don't have computers" that is about as silly as to say a member can't come to club activities because they have no car.

I'm 73, and was able to learn how to use the computer.  And because of this,  I was able to author two books we self published and have sold in 8 countries. I would never have been able to do that much writing on a typewriter and the Internet provided a myriad of ways to help in 6 years of research needed to get the books done.  Computers, like it or not, have replaced "snail" mail, and even telephones in many cases, because e-mail is so available and free to everyone in the entire world. As retired kinkers who have traveled with many shows, and the former owners of Delano Society Circus, I find the idea that a showfolk's club would be taking their web site down is like moving in reverse. Incredible. You expect younger people to join, and one day be in charge,  I wonder how many would think it's a club run by "old fogies", who are so far out of touch with reality that they don't have a web site.

Several years ago when there was a pernicious law in regard to making it ILLEGAL for circuses or any type show to have elephants, and for that matter any "exotic" animal. It was Internet access that we all used to defeat the bill. Thanks also to RBB&B as they had offices with attorneys maintained in Seattle. I personally spent 3 days on the computer helping to defeat the proposed law.

One of the sad issues these days is the complacency of show folks, and the lack of banding together to form cohesive groups to try and save the circus industry in the USA.  Looks like some in the Showfolks of Sarasota fall into that category.  On the subject of "sticking together", e-mails were sent out to all shows whose e-mail addresses we could locate that have animals, and all performers who use animals asking for their help in defeating the anti animal bill in Seattle by just writing a letter. The response and interest was minimal and very discouraging.  When a small group of people with the supposed "like" interests want to remove a web site that is such a vital part of communicating with members, other show people, and those interested in circuses across the world, it brings back to mind the lack of interest by many show people in defeating the Seattle bill.

You at the Showfolks of Sarasota have the opportunity to be a radiant beacon of communicating the well being of the circus in America to all the world. Too bad such an opportunity is being missed.  Thank you for the opportunity of venting my spleen when we are not members, nor any longer involved in the circus world.  It is still something we love.

To Whom It May Concern

While I am not a member of Showfolks, and do not live in the Sarasota area, I have been in the business most of my life and have seen many changes. To close this web site is just another example of the business trying to stay in the dark ages. Times have changed, the business has changed. While it is true that some people in the club may not be computer literate, many are, and if the club and for that mater the Circus is to survive it must be accessible to members and friends for support and fellowship. This web site is just another way to achieve this goal. I feel that it was well done and represents the good qualities of the club and allows people all over the world to see that the Circus is still alive in the USA and in touch with the times.  To shut down this web site would be like believing you can move a show on horse and wagon today. You have to keep up with the times - COMPUTERS ARE HERE TO STAY!  Good luck and best wishes,

I find it hard to understand, that a group such as Showfolks of Sarasota would close down the website. Circus people travel. They travel constantly, because their work requires it. The web is like instant news. There are wireless connections using a laptop. You can go to almost any Hotel lobby, book store, or any Starbucks and get an instant wireless connection to the Internet.

I remember when I was on the road years ago, and having to use a payphone all day long. Now there is the Cell Phone. People got used to using the cell phone instantly. Almost every Circus person has a cell phone. The Computer is the same way. It is mobile. You no longer need a telephone line to get a signal.

The Internet is accessible around the world, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and what's more, it is free. This is the future. I purchased showfolks.com some time back. It is just sitting there dormant at present, but can be activated if necessary. My business these days depends on the internet and the telephone a great deal. I also travel a lot. I take my laptop with me, because I can check my email and my business anytime of the day or night.

Skip has done a wonderful job with the website, and $300 per year is CHEAP hosting. That is less than $1 a day. If people like me can learn how to use the computer, anyone can learn. Today an 8 or 10 year old child is very proficient at operating the computer. An older person can also do it with the determination. I learned through trial and error, as did many of you.

I hope you will decide to keep the web site, and welcome to the twenty first century!

I haven't lived in Sarasota for years, but I do check out the website quite often to see what is going on at the club etc. The cost to keep the site on is very reasonable.  If money is the problem, then the people running the club are not paying attention to business.

To Whom it May Concern:

After recently returning from Monte Carlo and speaking with many of our circus friends, performers, and directors, it was mentioned many times how great the Showfolks of Sarasota website was.  They felt they could keep in touch with family, friends, and keep a finger on the pulse of circus in the US.  It truly saddens us to learn that this is all dissolved because some of the members do not have computers or are not interested.  We totally agree with the response sent by Ellian Rosaire as she told our feelings so very well.   We strongly urge our officers and board members to reconsider their decision. In rethinking, remember our shut ins, snow birds, and elderly who do not get out for most of the events as well as all those on the road.  Thank you for your consideration.

For those who are concerned for whatever reason, and those who never looked at the Showfolks website, as stated on the bottom of the Homepage of the site, “ Website and webpage development property of M. Skip Doyle” . Lets break down the sentence.  Website development property of M. Skip Doyle, and Webpage development property of M. Skip Doyle.  That does not mean the website domain (name and registration)  belongs to Mr. Doyle.  Any person with the expertise can develop the website according to whatever the “membership” wants to see.  But, sadly the membership supposedly voted to close down this growing and valuable asset to those out of town, on the other side of our country, and the world.  Mistakes have been made, but then corrected.  Maybe, the result of last weeks Membership Meeting was a mistake.  I hope someone will pick up the ball and convince the membership that a correction can be made.  If not, so be it.   Now, maybe the new and unique board can concentrate on the business of running the club without distraction.

It has come to my attention, the current membership of Showfolks of Sarasota is under the impression the $350 fee paid to the firm that hosts the website annually is payment to the webmaster for the upkeep and maintenance of the site.  I want to make it quite clear that the money does not go to the “Webmaster”.  For a year and half he has been doing this gratis, pro bono, free.  Perhaps the incoming Board of Directors can see fit to look beyond Lockwood Ridge Road into what is the Internet and the most viable means of communicating what our club is about, what is going on at any given time, and many more ideas.  We have had four deaths of members in the last week, this could be a way of communicating this information in a timely fashion.

I was unable to attend this past meeting as planned.  As a past Board Member I was very shocked and sad upon reading on my computer (at 1:45am), that the website was to be closed.  I don't recall any discussion about this at my last board meeting, or any other time. What is the reason, and how can the president & few people decide an issue like this without advance notice and membership approval?  We are always looking for members (really younger ones to carry on as many of us are in an older age) YOUNG people live on computers and if show kids happen to see SF Web Site with interesting features, they may want to come to the club.  The site should be of interest to ALL and not just meeting news, etc. ENTERTAINING -INTERESTING- INVITING isn't that what show people &showbiz is all about?  That is what Showfolks Club should BE.  I hope enough people will voice their opinions as I have, and can override the closing of the site, and continue it.  I think the club is kept too low key, and I am sure a lot   of people (show +) don't even know it is there?  I even have been told it was closed yrs ago? I am not a typist so better get to bed as it is going for 3:00am.

It is a shame that because of a few people the web site is now history. Some members did leave the meeting disgusted with the whole affair. Some had tried to give their opinion to no avail, so they left to.  Leaving made it easier to get a negative vote so they should have waited.  Honestly, I cannot tell you how many were for, or how many were not, as the raise of hands were never counted. I really think that is an illegal vote.  I will probably attend the club only when my sisters come down for a dinner.  I made the right decision to stay off the board.  Right now I am a little depressed.  Skip did a great job on the site.

How sad that less than a majority of the active members of Showfolks of Sarasota were able to make the decision to keep us in the Dark Ages and discontinue the Showfolks of Sarasota Website, rather than discuss and decide how to make the Website better. When Comments  were requested, on the Website, as to keeping the Website, I saw not a single negative reply.  Yet, I understand, at the last membership meeting, and I quote from one who attended,

"by the way NONE of the members want this web site....NONE.  apparently it was  .....  and Mr.  .....'.  idea???"

Obviously, having not been at the meeting, due to ill health, I rely on, and trust, the integrity of my close friends when they pass on the information as to what  transpires at the meetings.  I care very much what happens to "Showfolks of Sarasota" but not at the expense of health or friendship.  I do hope the new officers and board of directors will continue to work, as the past officers and board members have, with the total membership in mind.  We have a wonderful and unique club.  Let us not destroy it from within.  "just one persons opinion"

To all concerned,  Hello everyone.  I know I don't see any of you very often as I am pretty busy operating our businesses. We don't get to visit Showfolks  much these days but always enjoy ourselves when we do. It is a very special place to us as I practically grew up there and now it is a place where I can visit with friends, dance with my wonderful husband, Kazimierz, and feel comfortable because my children are also made welcome there.

I'm sorry that I was unaware of the situation regarding the website as I would have made an effort to save it. Even though many of you may not be computer savvy, there are those of us who have learned to make great use of it's convenience. Many times I have checked the Showfolks website for information, and I have always been happy to find what I needed at the touch of my fingertips. Most of the performers of my generation and younger now make use of computers and internet service on a daily basis.

The website could be visited by anyone, anywhere in the world, and even though Showfolks is a "private" club, the website gave out no "private" information. The fact that performers who are working on the other side of the world could actually go online and in a matter of seconds be in touch with what is happening at home is invaluable.

We can keep our generations-old traditions of circus intact while still embracing the technology of the day. Many performers have laptop computers which travel with them and are an important part of both their business and personal lives. Now that we have wireless internet available, there is no limit to what we can do in the way of computer use.

Rather than close the website, perhaps it would have been better to establish a more complete e-mail data base, and add an online newsletter and e-mail alerts for important events , or even an emergency contact alert.  I remember countless moments of anxiety while trying to contact someone on the road for either happy or sad reasons. Calling small-town police stations and trying to convince them to send someone to the fairgrounds to give a performer an urgent message to call home so we can tell them of some family member's illness or accident. Or calling the arena box office and hoping that someone will be brave enough to go out the back door where all those scary circus animals are, to tell a performer to call their agent right away.

I'm not trying to insult anyone who doesn't make use of the internet. I'm just saying that I think that for the small cost involved in running a website,  I think it has immeasurable value. The time and money involved in maintaining the site would be more than worth it if you were sitting in your trailer between shows at a civic center in Indiana when the performer parked next to you knocks on your door to tell you she just got an alert through the Showfolks website to contact your son regarding the birth of your first grandchild!   This is just my opinion, if there is anything I can do to help resurrect the website, let me know.  Love to all of you.

Ellian Rosaire, Showfolks Member

P.S. I would personally like to thank Skip Doyle for doing such a wonderful job.

No, and here is an additional reason not to even think about it.  Showfolks Annual Circus held at The Sarasota Agricultural Fair Association Arena yesterday was outstanding, awesome, and hundreds of people young and old, townies, and professionals packed the evening show.  My congratulations go out to the gracious performers and those in the background who put on one of the most memorable programs in over twenty years that I have been honored to have membership in this organization.   Too bad we cannot put aside all of the prejudice and animosity and accomplish great things in keeping Showfolks of Sarasota the Social Club it was meant to be.  GREAT JOB to everyone, I dare not list names or will surely miss someone.

We definitely need to keep Showfolks website.  This is today’s method to communicate information. Showfolks website is colorful, yet done in good taste containing appropriate and interesting content. This website has so much potential it would be a shame to see it disappear because a few people do not understand today’s technology, nor do they understand the value.

There have been over 4,500 visits so far, not all of these people are members of Showfolks, however they are individuals who are interested in the Circus. These people represent those who have a desire to and can help show folks to keep the circus alive.  They can assist to challenge animal activists when correctly informed. By limiting Showfolks website to club only related information, it will not be possible to keep Friends of the Circus interested.  Everybody needs accurate input to overcome misinformation that is sometimes circulated.  Personally, I visit many websites.  Some are interesting, and many boring.  When I visit a website, and it is not interesting with pictures and information, I do not return!

Anyone who has anything that might be interesting to visitors who take the time to view Showfolks website should be offered ability to submit it to the Webmaster for evaluation to determine if appropriate to be used within.  Gossip should be totally unacceptable.  Stories about show people’s lives, and circuses, that have not been published else ware, might be considered. So far, Showfolks website has illustrated nothing but positive appropriate information, and I would like to see this site continued. Those who might disagree need to get with the times.  A lot of hours have been invested by the Webmaster to create Showfolks website, for which the Webmaster has not been paid a dime.  I do understand the cost to maintain a website.  It is my opinion, Showfolks Board of Directors, and members, need to become correctly informed to work out how to fund continuing development and maintenance of Showfolks website.

The Website should definitely be continued.  Most people are aware of the importance of the Internet.  It is therefore important to keep it updated...The way it is now, still in 2004, is not exactly a complement to Showfolks.  Board of directors and active members of the Club must agree and approve of anything that goes into the Website using Showfolks of Sarasota name.  Suggestions, comments, and ideas from active and social members should be welcomed.

Showfolks Website is one of the best projects the Board of Directors, and current President Pedro Mural, adopted during their 2 years in office.  This Website offers the club membership, and others, information about Showfolks of Sarasota, the club's purpose, and events that are taking place in Sarasota FL.  Too much erroneous and sometimes slanted comments about the club, and some members, is conveyed through unnecessary gossip by a few members and individuals who seem to have self-serving egos or axes to grind.  Showfolks Website is credible, factual, and informative, and should be continued to inform those have sincere interest in Circus!.

To Whom It May Concern,

How sad, one of the most positive aspects of Showfolks of Sarasota may be discontinued due to lack of understanding the importance of the internet.  Knowledge that Showfolks of Sarasota even exists today is very limited.  If new members are wanted, one of the best ways to make them aware of the unique opportunity to join one of the most interesting Social Clubs in the world is through the internet.  Perhaps a Social Membership would be a positive part of Showfolks Membership Application. Those members would take no part in the business aspect of the Club, no voting rights, no membership meetings, no officer or board membership. Only Social activities, volunteer privileges, and access to the club when it is open.  I feel the Webmaster has done an outstanding job overall and it would be very foolish to discontinue Showfolks beautiful and informative website.  If changes should be made to the website, discuss it, and do it. Don't destroy it just because some do not understand its importance and possibilities.

Sincerely,

Bunni Bartok (Showfolks member)

Re:  Showfolks Circus

My wife and I went down to Sarasota last night to see the Showfolks Circus, mainly to see the Pages family elephant and cat act which we had never seen before. Well worth the trip, the acts presented by good looking young people and the stock well groomed and cared for. They worked with no muss, no fuss and a credit to the business.

Actually the whole show was entertaining, I don't think there was an act in the program I had seen before, mostly Russians I believe. Tommy Baker was the Ring Master and his introduction of the acts in the King's English had a nice flair. Schlarbaum played the come-in but we were subjected to a variety of dirges, requiems and bongo drums on tape for the rest of the program which ,of course, is the fashion today.

They had a chap that performed on a unicycle that had no seat, just pedals. He would vault from one to another. A 10 year old drop-juggler that was very good also. Three ring aerial display. Two Russian lady contortionists and an act consisting of three people who skinnied up and down a vertical pole. Tommy introduced them as having just come from the Big Apple Circus which was unnecessary since their drab, pastel colored wardrobe and lack of glitz and glamour was a dead giveaway.

The act that everyone talked about however was the Russian goose act. By that I mean that the lady in the Mother Hubbard costume was Russian and the geese came from wherever geese come from. After eight minutes there was no doubt in anyone's mind that you can train a goose to walk up a ramp and down the other side.

The highlight of the evenings entertainment, as always, came after the show at the Club where Col.. Herriott and myself administered wise counsel.

Re:     Showfolks Stardom of Fame

Although Circus Model Builders, Circus Fans, Circus Historical Society, or Windjammers have not worked in the industry, many feel very close to it. Many individuals belonging to these organizations, as well as belonging to Showfolks in their own way, work hard to keep the public "Circus Minded".

Here are some examples:

Circus Model Builders display their models to keep up interest in the circus. Many times they display their models in conjunction with a circus appearing in their area to help promote ticket sales.

Circus Historical Society members increase awareness by displaying memorabilia, speaking to senior groups, presenting talks about the circus to school groups, and those that research help to put the history of the circus in order for generations in the future.

Circus Windjammers help to keep great old time circus music on the public's mind which also helps to promote the industry. Many are musicians who get together and put on circus music concerts to promote the industry, or a particular show.

Circus Fans, just by their motto "We Fight Anything That Fights the Circus", support the industry. Of course there are good, and not so good, members of the above organizations. But overall, I know many who promote the industry, assist shows and show people, helping in any way they can. These are friends of the industry, and those who are (Showfolks) club members should have an opportunity to be recognized by Showfolks.

I belong to the CFA Felix Adler Tent, which is out of New Jersey. Recently we had a dinner and we all got together. Jack Beebe was in attendance representing the OABA Circus Fund. He brought along about 20 OABA circus fund pins. A $12.00 dollar donation to the fund got you a pin. He collected over $300 for the fund. An auction was held for circus memorabilia with proceeds from the auction going to this fund as well. I think over $600 was raised. This made for a nice donation to the OABA Circus fund.

Many times , Circus fans and others help shows coming into their hometown, are called upon to run errands, help bill posting, find medical care for performers, find vets, and help by working with a sponsor. Some have also attended town or city meetings defending the animal presentation issues faced today by the whole industry. The list can go on and on. I know, I have been there.

A suggestion: There is a (Showfolks Stardom of Fame) Gold Star, and a Silver Star. Might it be possible for a Bronze Star to be added for "Circus Friends" or "Circus Supporters". Just an idea. I hope to meet up with you as I am planning a trip to be in Sarasota December 1st through the 6th. I am proud to be a member of Showfolks. I am good friends with the Logan Family. Omi sponsored my membership.

I hope Showfolks board considers adding something that would recognize our members who although not in the industry have and continue to work hard to help promote it, combat opposition to it, and support in every way they can.

Thank you for your time and consideration
Circusly yours,
